Worthing Thunder continued their winning streak to go 6 games unbeaten with a comfortable 15 point victory (102 – 87) against visiting Leicester Warriors at Worthing Leisure Centre last Saturday.
In what turned out to be an exhibition of 3 point shooting, 28 baskets from behind the arc were hit between the two sides. It was Barkers of Tarring man-of-the match Alex Owumi however who was on fire hitting 7 three-pointers at a success rate of 66.6% and who lead Thunder to another home victory for the home crowd to celebrate.
Although it was the visitors who were quickest to start heading out to a 4-0 lead it was not long before Thunder imposed themselves on the game finishing the stronger of the two sides to lead at the end of the first period 25-16 with Dominic Ives topping the scorers with 10 points. More of the same was to follow in the second quarter with Owumi himself scoring 10 points to ensure Thunder increased their lead and went into the locker room with a comfortable 13 point advantage (53-40).
The Warriors started the second half with more determination and stepped up their game matching Thunder’s long-range shooting shot-for-shot and pulling the lead back to just 9 points. That really was as good as it got for the visitors and with Cameron Hildreth scoring 15 points in the last quarter alone, Leicester gradually slipped out of the game and Thunder were left to cruise home to a well-deserved solid victory and maintain their challenge for league honours. With results elsewhere going in Thunder’s favour, Worthing find themselves in second place with Hemel Storm on 8 wins and 2 defeats but 4 points behind league leaders Solent Kestrels who so far remain unbeaten this season.
Thunder scorers: Alex Owumi (28 points) ; Cameron Hildreth (21 points); Dominic Ives (17 points); Zaire Taylor (16 points); AJ Basi (16 points); Josh Goddard (2 points); Ishmael Fontaine (2 points)
