Community Activities

Worthing Thunder do not limit themselves to putting basketball teams on court. As one of the largest and best-supported clubs in Sussex, Worthing Thunder fully recognises the opportunities which exist to extend their work into the wider community. Over the years the club has delivered coaching to numerous schools and organisation throughout the county and in the forthcoming season the Club is delighted to be able to announce that with the support of two major sponsors this programme is to be extended significantly to allow many more children in the area to experience the opportunity to participate in basketball.

West Sussex County Council Big Society Fund

A successful bid to the West Sussex County Council has resulted in Worthing Thunder being awarded a grant to deliver 15 coaching sessions to 20 primary schools during the forthcoming season as well as 15 sessions of coaching to disadvantaged groups. The programme allows our qualified players and coaches to visit schools throughout the area delivering fun-based, high quality basketball coaching. As well as promoting a more active life-style and providing an opportunity for children to be introduced to the sport, each participant will be provided with free match night tickets and a free Thunder / WSCC branded t-shirt. It is hoped that this programme will reach nearly 450 children throughout the season.

Rampion Fund

A similar programme to that sponsored by WSCC Big Society Fund will allow Thunder to deliver a programme of basketball activities targeted specifically to disabled groups in the area. This programme although not as extensive as the Big Society Fund, will finance 30 sessions of coaching to local groups along with free match night tickets for participants and branded t-shirts.

The Club are immensely grateful to West Sussex County Council, Rampion and Basketball England for their support in this valuable community-based project.

St Peter’s Catholic Primary School – 13th September 2018

“Just wanted to give you some feedback on the Basketball Club last night. The children thoroughly enjoyed it. The coach, Ishmael, was fantastic and so good with the children. He took time to speak with them and their parents. The activities he ran were well organised, and very well delivered to ensure the children gained maximum benefit. We look forward to the coming weeks!”
