Thunder travelled to Loughborough Student Riders buoyed by their tremendous game the night before. Loughborough, who had also had a big win the previous evening, stood between Thunder and a guaranteed second place in the league.
The first quarter saw Loughborough take an early lead, but Thunder then had a promising 8-0 run to gain the upper hand. An 11-3 run for Thunder towards the end of the quarter, saw Thunder take a narrow advantage into the first break (27-19). After last night’s three point extravaganza, only one three was hit in the first quarter; which was by Tom Ward.
The second period saw Thunder play some great team basketball, with everyone contributing. Three threes in the second 10 minutes showed that they had not lost the touch; however it was the defence that stood out. Limiting the Riders to just 9 points, and going on a 15-0 run, went a long way to dispiriting the home side; putting Thunder firmly in control at the halfway stage (55-28). Things were looking good and Thunder’s travelling supporters were in good voice.
The third period was a closer run game, but it was the Thunder who were in control. Four more threes and tight defence saw a confident Thunder managing the game and as the penultimate ten minutes came to an end, the lead had grown slightly to 29 points at 77-48.
The final stanza again saw Thunder put on a defensive masterclass, limiting the defending League Champions to just 10 points. The defence played outstandingly and the offence was also on fire, combining for another seven threes. As the end of the game approached, the Riders were visibly disheartened as Thunder poured in a further 28 points. It was a happy group who made the journey back to the South Coast with an impressive 105-58 victory.
After the previous night’s near performance, Zaire Taylor managed to obtain his career first quadruple-double and the rest of the Thunder played exceptionally well.
Thunders next game is Saturday 23rd March, away at Derby Trailblazers, a 7:15pm tip-off.
Scorers: Alex Owumi – 22 points (6 threes), Zaire Taylor – 21 points (16 rebounds, 13 assists, 11 steals) Brendan Okoronkwo – 20 points, Jorge Ebanks – 12 points, Tom Ward – 11 points, Naz McLaughlin – 9 points (3 threes), Ishmael Fontaine – 6 points and Josh Goddard – 4 points.
