Recap

This much awaited match up between the teams occupying 2nd and 1st respectively took place in front of a large, boisterous crowd on Saturday. The game started badly for the home favourites as Solent’s big American, Travis Charles, proved unstoppable in the opening period. Thunder trailed by as many as 11 points in the early minutes. Zaire and Tom pulled it back with consecutive threes but as the quarter progressed, Solent pulled away again to lead by 9 with only 2 minutes to the first break. A quick 7 points by Zaire in the last minute and a half saw Thunder pull it back to just a 2 point deficit at the first break (22-24).

A further 4 points (11-0 run) quickly after the break saw Thunder take an unlikely lead before the game saw the teams trading baskets for the majority of the period. Thunder once again trailed by 5 points as the halfway stage approached, but again a 7-point run saw Thunder head to the dressing room with a small lead (46-43), but clearly there was a lot of ball still to play.

The third quarter was again back and forth with neither team gaining a real advantage. Brendan was in great form leading Thunder’s defence and, in a low scoring period, it was Thunder who shaded it by a single point to lead by 4 (60-56) as the final break was reached.

The last period was a tough one for Thunder as Solent gave everything. Great defending by Brendan (again), Zaire and Josh kept Thunder just edging it. However it was the scoring once again of Jorge, who was perfect; making all 13 points in the final quarter. Culminating with two free throws after being fouled (after a full court Zaire pass) he then went to the line to put Thunder up by one with under a minute remaining. Thunder were convinced that Alex had made a great dunk with 12 seconds remaining; until it was ruled out for a charge. This led to a tense finish to the game but Thunder held strong in defence to win by the solitary point (73-72) and take top spot in the league. Once again it was a great team effort in defence and offence but it was Jorge Ebanks who was named Barkers Tarring MVP – his fourth award in as many games.

SCORERS- Jorge -24 points (7 rebounds), Zaire 19 points (7 rebounds), Alex 14 points, Tom 7 points, Brendan 4 points, Ishmael 3 points and Josh 2 points.
